WHERE THE BEST MEET

Over the years, the Maybank Malaysian Open and Maybank Championship featured some of the world’s top players competing for honours against the region’s leading golfers and our own home-grown talents

Among the big-name players that graced the events were Major winners Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Henrik Stenson, Danny Willett, Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer and Darren Clarke, along with other household names such as Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ryo Ishikawa and Thongchai Jaidee.

Testament to the in-depth quality of the fields over the years is that only one of these Major winners managed to win, namely Oosthuizen in the 2012 Maybank Malaysian Open at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC).

McIlroy came close to winning the 2011 Maybank Malaysian Open, finishing just two shots behind winner Matteo Manassero at KLGCC. McIlroy went on to claim the first of his four Major titles later that year with an eight-shot victory in the U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club, with the Northern Irish star setting a tournament record total of 16-under-par.

It was not just the quality of the players and their skills that defined our golf events as world-class. The overall organisation, set-up, spectator engagement and player hospitality during each tournament were on par with, if not better than, what you would experience in marquee golf events.

Maybank’s world-class tradition in golf will be continued and amplified with the upcoming Maybank Championship as part of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, which will see the world’s leading female golfers showcasing their excellence, patience, passion and perseverance at KLGCC’s West Course on October 26-29.
